April 2015 Newsletter
Steward Integrated Preschool
Miss Judy, Miss Diane and Miss Robyn
It was great to see the families who came to the
Steward Open House on April 16th.
We hope you got a chance to visit the Scholastic Book Fair and enjoy
some ice cream. Miss Diane, Miss Robyn
and I were delighted to receive many new books for our class thanks to your
generosity.
We’re looking forward to our Spring Teas next
week! The children have been practicing
a song that they will sing for you. The portraits of their mothers are going to
look beautiful on the bulletin board! We
also have a couple of surprises for you!
Miss Maghan’s practicum is ending this week. We have been very fortunate to have her as a
student teacher in our classroom since February. She will be greatly missed by the teachers
and children. She did an amazing job
planning her unit pertaining to rain and rainbows. Her lessons were well executed and highly
motivating.
Theme
Miss Maghan began the Rain and Rainbows theme by
finding out what the children already knew and what they wanted to know about
rain and rainbows. Each student made a
model of a rain cloud in a cup using shaving cream, colored water and eye
droppers. The activity was a big
hit! They made three-dimensional rainbows
out of pipe cleaners, stringing straw beads and Styrofoam. Miss Maghan read books about rain and
rainbows, such as Raindrop Plop! by Wendy Cheyette Lewison and A
Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman.
Her Raindrop Math and Rainbow Math games addressed several of the
preschool standards for mathematical content (e.g., Listen to and say the names
of numbers in meaningful contexts). The
children enjoyed singing “It is Raining” and the “Colors of the Rainbow” songs! As a summative assessment, Maghan asked the
children what they had learned about rain and rainbows. It was great to see the growth from the
beginning to the end of the unit!
