Symmetry in Art

As part of our "Mittens" theme, the children explored symmetry in art. In preparation for the activity, I folded white construction paper in half and cut out mitten shapes (leaving the fold). The children used eyedroppers to put drops of paint onto their mitten.

When they finished painting, I helped them fold their paper in the opposite direction. After the paper was folded, they pressed the two sides together.

Once they finished pressing their paper, I asked, "Are you ready for magic?" The children unfolded their paper to see symmetry in art. They were very excited to see what they had made!

With prompting and support, the children found shapes/colors that are the same or similar on both mittens.

Arts – E & PD 2.5 - For pattern and symmetry, explore the use of patterns and symmetrical shapes in 2D and 3D works. Identify patterns and symmetrical forms and shapes in the environment and artwork. Explain and demonstrate ways in which patterns and symmetrical shapes may be made. For example, a student folds and cuts paper to achieve symmetry, or makes printed patterns.
